Mercy Health Services, meanwhile, was founded in 1831 by Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Ireland. CHE was established by the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany in 1859 and began its healthcare ministry in 1883 by assuming responsibility for St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boston.
