Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, is widely regarded as one of the best hospitals in the state and the nation. For 21 consecutive years, from 1991 to 2020, it was ranked as the best overall hospital in the United States by U.S. News. The hospital is the teaching facility and biomedical research centre of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. It was founded in 1889 thanks to a bequest of over $7 million (approximately $173.84 million in 2022 dollars) by Johns Hopkins, a Baltimore merchant and banker. Hopkins' wish was for the hospital to "compare favourably with any other institution of like character in this country or in Europe".
Johns Hopkins Hospital is located at 600 North Broadway in Baltimore, and it is open 24 hours a day. The hospital and its school of medicine are considered the founding institutions of modern American medicine. Several medical specialties were founded at the hospital, including neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, and child psychiatry.
