Palmetto Health and Greenville Health System merger
In June 2017, Palmetto Health and Greenville Health System announced their plans to merge, creating the largest health system in South Carolina. The merger was expected to be finalised by January 1st of the following year.
The merger brought together the state's two largest hospital groups, with Palmetto Health being the largest, and Greenville Health System being the second-largest. Combined, the new company would own one out of every five hospital beds in the state and employ one out of every five physicians. The new network would also become the largest private employer in South Carolina, with over 28,000 healthcare workers and 2,800 physicians.
The deal required approval from several groups, including the boards of Palmetto Health, Richland Memorial Hospital, and Baptist Healthcare System, as well as clearance from federal anti-trust scrutiny. The new company would be overseen by a newly organised board with equal representation from both current boards.
The merged company was expected to generate $3.9 billion in annual net revenue, with 13 hospitals and hundreds of physician practices and ambulatory centres serving 1.2 million patients annually. Nearly half of South Carolinians would be within a 15-minute drive of one of the facilities.
The CEOs of both companies, Charles D. Beaman Jr. of Palmetto Health and Michael C. Riordan of Greenville Health System, emphasised the benefits of the merger for the community. They highlighted their shared commitment to ensuring that all community members, including those in rural areas, have access to high-quality, affordable healthcare.
