SBUH is Long Island's only tertiary care and Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center. The hospital is ranked as the 12th best in New York and 10th in the New York metropolitan area by U.S. News & World Report.
The idea for the region's academic medical center was conceived in 1963 when then New York State Governor Nelson Rockefeller commissioned a report. Construction of the hospital began in 1973 and was completed in 1978 at a cost of approximately $150 million. The hospital opened its doors in 1980, employing 800 people.
In 2005, a new Heart Center was opened inside the hospital, containing a new Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Cardiac Acute Care Unit (CACU), angioplasty suites, and electrophysiology labs. In 2007, the Center for Outpatient Services at Stony Brook University opened its doors, offering service areas such as The Imaging Center, the Center for Pain Management, and the Outpatient Cancer Center.
Stony Brook University Hospital has continued to expand and strengthen its network. In 2008, SBUH opened Phase I of its first major renovation, which included a new wing housing the Woman and Infants Center, an expanded Emergency Department, and a Surgical Suite. That same year, Stony Brook University Hospital and Southampton Hospital announced a comprehensive alliance to bring new and strengthened clinical services to the South Fork of Suffolk County.
In 2020, SBUH faced a bomb threat when an armed man entered the emergency room. The hospital has since continued to grow and achieve milestones, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2020 and being named one of America's 100 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades every year since 2019.
