Taunton State Hospital is a psychiatric facility
Taunton State Hospital, located on Hodges Avenue in Taunton, Massachusetts, is a psychiatric facility with a long history. Established in 1854, it was originally known as the State Lunatic Hospital at Taunton or the Taunton Lunatic Asylum. It was the second state asylum in Massachusetts, following the one in Worcester.
The hospital's architecture is quite notable, with most of the original part of the facility designed in a rare neo-classical style by architects Boyden & Ball. It is also a Kirkbride Plan hospital, reflecting the early to mid-nineteenth-century humanitarian reform movement for "the insane" and their treatment programs. The campus is sprawling, covering 154 acres of land, and was designed to offer fresh air and sunlight to its patients, in line with Kirkbride's concept for treating mental health patients.
Over time, the complex expanded to include over forty buildings and structures. Additions included juvenile facilities, crisis centres, sick wards, and group homes. The main part of the hospital, known as the Kirkbride Building, closed in 1975, and unfortunately fell into disrepair. Despite this, in 1994, the property was recognised for its historical significance and was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. Sadly, in 1999, the main dome of the administration building collapsed, and in 2006, a large part of the historic complex was destroyed by fire.
Today, Taunton State Hospital remains open and continues to provide psychiatric services with 48 beds. In addition to psychiatric care, the hospital houses the Women's Recovery from Addiction Program, a residential program under the Department of Youth Services, and a substance abuse program administered by the High Point Treatment Center. The hospital also has a greenhouse on campus that is staffed by patients and sells plants and seasonal produce to the public.
