Henry Ford Hospital, a not-for-profit corporation, opened its doors to patients on 1 October 1915. The hospital was founded by automotive pioneer Henry Ford, who envisioned creating a hospital for the working man. The original seven buildings, including a service building, power house, garage, private patient building, surgical pavilion, and two other small buildings, were completed that year, and the first patients were admitted on 1 October.
The hospital was financed and built by Henry Ford, who organised a closed staff of physicians and surgeons, many of whom came from Johns Hopkins. Within two years, construction of a larger building began on the same 20-acre site. In 1917, it was determined that more space was needed, and Ford Motor Company architect Albert Wood was hired to design a new hospital. However, construction was interrupted by World War I, and in 1918, Ford loaned the semi-completed building to the US government for use as US Army General Hospital Number 36.
After the war, construction resumed, and in 1921, the new 50,000-square-foot building opened, providing 500 new beds for the growing Detroit community.
