The hospital has undergone several expansions and renovations over the years. In 1970, Abbott Hospital and Northwestern Hospital merged due to the need for larger and better facilities and an increasing shortage of trained personnel. University of Minnesota Medical Centre
The University of Minnesota Medical Centre, located in Minneapolis, is a general medical and surgical facility and teaching hospital with 743 inpatient beds. It first opened in 1909 in an old fraternity building and initially offered free treatment to all patients. However, as demand grew, it became clear that this model was unsustainable. In 1911, the Elliot Memorial Hospital was built on campus as a dedicated hospital facility with 115 beds. This new hospital served two key functions: providing free healthcare services for charitable cases across the state and serving as a modern clinical teaching facility for medical students.
Today, the University of Minnesota Medical Centre is nationally ranked in adult cancer care and paediatric nephrology. It is also rated as high-performing in gastroenterology and GI surgery for adults. The centre is affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School and is the flagship hospital of M Health Fairview, a partnership between the University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota Physicians, and Fairview Health Services.
The University of Minnesota Medical Centre, East Bank, opened its doors in 1987 and is the hospital's main campus today. The hospital is equipped to handle a variety of medical and surgical needs and is recognised for its clinical excellence in several fields.

St Cloud Hospital
St. Cloud Hospital is a 489-bed medical and surgical facility located in St. Cloud, Minnesota. It is the largest of the eight hospitals operated by CentraCare, a non-profit health system based in central Minnesota. The hospital has over 9,000 employees, 400 physicians, and 1,200 volunteers, serving 690,000 people in a 12-county area.
The history of St. Cloud Hospital dates back to the late 1880s, with the establishment of St. Benedict's Hospital in 1886 by Roman Catholic nuns from the Order of St. Benedict. In 1889, the nuns relocated to a larger site southeast of the city, establishing St. Raphael's, which opened in 1890. However, accessibility issues due to a lack of roads and bridges led to the need for another move. In May 1926, construction began on a new hospital north of St. Cloud, and it was formally dedicated as St. Cloud Hospital in February 1928, becoming the current site of the hospital.
St. Cloud Hospital has undergone various changes in ownership and management over the years. In 1962, the nuns relinquished ownership, incorporating it into a non-profit corporation. The Diocese of St. Cloud joined in 1975 to preserve the hospital's Catholic character. Since 1995, the hospital has operated under the local Catholic Church of St. Cloud's guidance, and that same year, St. Cloud Hospital merged with the St. Cloud Clinic of Internal Medicine to form the non-profit CentraCare Health System.
Today, St. Cloud Hospital is nationally recognised in several adult specialties. It is ranked in cardiology and heart surgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, geriatrics, and urology. The hospital also excels in other areas, including the St. Cloud Hospital Sleep Center for sleep disorder treatment, the Rehabilitation Center for neck and back pain, traumatic brain injuries, and stroke rehabilitation, and the Parent, Child & Women's Services, which includes a Family Birthing Center, Children's Center, and Women's Health services. Additionally, the hospital's Breast Center provides comprehensive care for breast cancer patients, including screenings, diagnostics, and treatment plans.
